BOOK REVIEW: The Cousins by Karen M McManus

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pages: 325

Genre: YA Thriller/Mystery

Ever since reading One of Us is Lying last year, I’ve been a big McManus fan and I’d buy any book she writes.

I feel excited for every book she publishes and consider her one of my auto-buy authors.

However, I have to admit that I was slightly disappointed with The Cousins. It was an enjoyable read, but it was slightly slow at times and I expected the plot twists to be much more shocking. I just didn’t find this as gripping and riveting as her previous books. The initial twists had me on the edge of my seat, but the bigger twists towards the end just had me feeling slightly underwhelmed.

In The Cousins, we get to know Milly, Aubrey and Jonah. They are cousins, but they don’t know each other very well, the Story family split apart by the fact that their grandmother disinherited her four children years ago out of nowhere. To everyone’s surprise, the Story grandchildren get invited to their grandmother’s resort for the summer, where they discover some family secrets that have been kept for years.

I loved the characters as I always do with her books - the characters she writes are always easy to connect with. They all have their own unique personalities, character traits and ways of thinking.

All this being said, I’ve seen some incredible reviews for this book, so maybe this one just wasn’t for me. I would definitely recommend giving her books a try if you haven’t already. My favourites so far were One of Us is Lying and One of Us is Next.

I am very excited to read You’ll be the Death of Me soon and I am already looking forward to Nothing More to Tell (coming 2022) and One of Us is Back (coming 2023), as I absolutely adore her writing.
